The 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected to be one of the largest sporting events in history, attracting billions of viewers and millions of visitors across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Australia and Asia-Pacific. While the Football tournament promises enthusiasm on the field, it also acts a highly striking target to cybercriminals.

The extensive use of digital technologies, online ticketing systems, smart stadiums, and global broadcasting networks increases the risk of sophisticated cyber-attacks. Several cyber threats are considered particularly dangerous for the tournament.

1}One of the most feared attacks is ransomware. Cybercriminals could target FIFA’s operational systems, stadium management networks, transportation infrastructure, or broadcasting services. By encrypting critical data and demanding payment for its release, attackers could disrupt matches, delay operations, and cause significant financial losses. A successful ransomware attack during the tournament could create widespread chaos and damage FIFA’s reputation.

2} Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks are another major concern. These attacks overwhelm servers and websites with massive amounts of traffic, making them inaccessible to users. Ticketing platforms, live-streaming services, and official World Cup websites are likely targets. If fans are unable to access tickets, match schedules, or live broadcasts, public dissatisfaction and operational challenges could quickly escalate.

3} Ticket fraud and phishing campaigns are also expected to rise. Cybercriminals often create fake websites and emails that mimic official FIFA communications. Unsuspecting fans may be tricked into purchasing counterfeit tickets or revealing sensitive personal and financial information. Such attacks not only result in financial losses but also undermine trust in digital services associated with the event.

4} Another significant threat is attacks on critical infrastructure. Smart stadiums rely heavily on interconnected systems for security, access control, lighting, and communications. Hackers could exploit vulnerabilities in these systems to disrupt operations or create safety concerns. Transportation networks, hotels, and public services supporting the tournament may also become targets.

5} Data breaches represent an additional risk. FIFA, sponsors, broadcasters, and hospitality providers collect vast amounts of personal information from fans, players, and employees. Cybercriminals may attempt to steal this data for financial gain, identity theft, or espionage. The exposure of sensitive information could lead to legal consequences and reputational damage.

6} Finally, misinformation and social engineering attacks may be used to spread false information about match schedules, security incidents, or ticket availability. Such campaigns can cause confusion, panic, and public distrust, especially when amplified through social media platforms.

To counter these threats, organizers must invest in advanced cybersecurity measures, continuous monitoring, employee training, and international cooperation among security agencies. As cyber threats continue to evolve, protecting the digital infrastructure of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be just as important as securing the stadiums themselves.
