A major cybersecurity incident has impacted the State of Texas, with personal information belonging to more than three million residents reportedly exposed following a data breach involving the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). The incident is being described as one of the largest government-related data breaches in the state’s history and has prompted authorities to initiate notification and support measures for affected individuals.
According to information published by the Texas Attorney General’s Office, unauthorized actors gained access to a TPWD database containing records associated with residents who had obtained hunting and fishing licenses through the department. The compromised data reportedly includes personally identifiable information such as names, residential addresses, driver’s license numbers, passport information, and other identifying details.
Initial reports sparked concerns that highly sensitive information, including Social Security numbers and dates of birth, may have been exposed during the cyberattack. However, TPWD has clarified that the affected server did not store Social Security numbers, credit card information, or dates of birth. As a result, officials believe the breach may pose a lower risk than originally feared, although the exposure of identity-related information still presents a significant concern for affected residents.
Cybersecurity experts warn that even when financial information is not compromised, personal details such as names, addresses, and government-issued identification numbers can be exploited by cybercriminals for identity theft, phishing campaigns, social engineering attacks, and other forms of fraud. Individuals whose information has been exposed are therefore advised to remain vigilant and monitor their accounts and personal records for suspicious activity.
The incident highlights the growing cybersecurity challenges faced by government agencies that maintain large databases containing citizen information. Public sector organizations have increasingly become attractive targets for cybercriminals because of the vast amounts of sensitive data they store and the critical services they provide.
In response to the breach, TPWD has established a dedicated call center to assist affected individuals and answer questions regarding the incident and ongoing response efforts. Residents can contact the helpline at 844-959-7123 during business hours, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday.
As an additional measure to support those impacted, the department is offering complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services. Officials are encouraging affected residents to take advantage of these services and to carefully review any notifications they receive regarding the breach.
Investigations into the incident remain ongoing, with authorities continuing efforts to determine the full scope of the compromise and implement measures designed to prevent similar attacks in the future.
