Twitter suffers a major security breach as prominent accounts get hacked

Twitter accounts of many prominent personalities like Kanye West, Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Joe Biden, Elon Musk, Barack Obama, Kim & Khloe Kardashian were hacked by cyber criminals who then displayed a requesting message to transfer bitcoins to anonymous e-wallets controlled by hackers.

What actually happened?

Some hackers tried to take over the accounts of celebrities like Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and posted tweets on their behalf requesting them to donate money for those who couldn’t afford treatment for COVID 19- assuring them double their donated sum after a period.

To contain the damage, Twitter immediately blocked all the verified accounts from Tweeting or resetting their password. And the back-end team tried to their best to solve the incident by the end of Wednesday, i.e. July 15th, 2020.

Twitter is yet to confirm whether the attack took place on its own servers or on the third party. But admitted that the incident was sophisticated in nature and could have raised from a log-in vulnerability crisis.

‘This appears to be the worst hack happening in the history of Twitter and its time for the social media platform to wake up’, said Dmitri Alperovitch, the cofounder of CrowdStrike- a Cybersecurity firm from California.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said that it was a tougher day for Twitter and felt terrible for what has happened.

Later in the night, BBC reported that most of the tweets were diverting users to a web portal – cryptoforhealth.com registered by an email address mkeyworth5@gmail dot com
