Verizon Cyber Espionage Report

Verizon, the telecommunication giant of America, has released a first of its kind Cyber Espionage report after analyzing data collected from its investigations on data breaches and threat research.

The Telecom giant says that its Cyber Espionage Report can act as a guiding force to professionals in cyber security field are in constant search of improving their organizations’ cyber defense posture and incident response.

Vital findings in the report suggest that among those conducting espionage over 85% of actors were linked to states, 8% to nations and 4% were linked to organized crime. What’s interesting is the fact that over 2% of threat actors were found to be former employees.

The business sectors that were deeply impacted by cyber espionage in the past 7 years are public sector companies, manufacturing industries, professional and information related industries along with mining, education and finance industries.

While the public sector industries bore the brunt with a recorded 31% of data breaches, manufacturing and professional sector witnessed 22% and 11% of breaches on a respective note.

Verizon found in its study that an organization can easily be compromised in seconds. But the hack might take years to be detected. As per the survey stats, the most common among breaches were Web applications making up to 27% of breaches, while 14% were linked to miscellaneous errors and the rermaining were related to others.

Researchers notified that espionage tactics are very difficult to detect, and so the breached figures might be much more than recorded.
