Amazon Web Services (AWS) Faces Major Outage, Speculation Rises Over Potential Cyber Attack

Cyber Attack March 19 2025

Amazon Web Services (AWS), one of the world’s leading cloud service providers, is currently experiencing a significant outage. While AWS has yet to issue an official statement confirming the cause, several media outlets are speculating that this disruption may be the result of a targeted cyber attack, possibly orchestrated by state-sponsored actors. However, it’s important to note that these theories remain speculative at this stage, with no definitive information available from Amazon.

Regardless of the cause, the impact of the AWS outage is already being felt globally. Numerous major applications and services across different industries have been knocked offline. Among the affected platforms are household names like Snapchat, Roblox, Duolingo, Zoom, Fortnite, Ring, Venmo, as well as financial services such as Robinhood, Coinbase, and Lloyds Bank. Airlines, including Delta and United Airlines, have also reported disruptions to their services, further exacerbating the situation. Even tech-focused companies like Perplexity AI have been affected, highlighting the broad reach of the AWS cloud ecosystem.

In response to the growing concerns, Amazon issued a brief update a few hours ago confirming that the underlying cause of the outage has been identified. The company stated that recovery efforts are well underway, with many of the affected applications gradually returning to normal functionality. As of now, it appears that AWS is making progress in restoring service across its global network.

However, amid the ongoing recovery process, a source with business intelligence posted on X (formerly Twitter), suggesting that the disruption might be linked to a cyber attack carried out by the Chinese hacking group Salt Typhoon. This group, which made headlines earlier this year, was reported to have compromised at least 14 telecom networks across the United States, raising concerns about the extent and sophistication of their operations. While this claim remains unverified, it adds fuel to the growing speculation surrounding the potential involvement of state-sponsored cyber attackers.

As the situation continues to evolve, businesses and consumers alike are closely monitoring AWS’s response and any further developments. Given the vast scale of AWS’s services and its critical role in powering much of the global internet infrastructure, any prolonged outage could have significant repercussions for a wide range of industries.
