Facebook to ask for ID Proof to stop the spread of fake news

2556

For one year, the social media giant Facebook(FB) has been asking its users to submit some sort of ID proofs to prove their identity of existence. And this includes submission of any of the following identification proofs like green cards, passport numbers, license, bank statement, social security number, medical insurance number, driver’s license, Tribal identification or status card, voter ID card, school ID card, employment verification certificate, Utility bill, social welfare card, address proof certificate, family certificate, visa card, national age certificate, tax ID cards, and immigration registration certificates.

Wonder how secure the submitted digital information is stored on the Facebook servers- especially after the Cambridge Analytica scandal came into light in March 2018 where information related to 87 million American users was reported to have been used by the British consulting firm in 2015 to influence the 2016 US polls which eventually went in favor of Donald Trump.

Now information is out that the FB is urging its users to again submit their proof of existence, provided their accounts are exhibiting strange behavior of spreading fake news.

Officials from the social media giant’s office say that the move is aimed to prevent the spread of misinformation and will only apply to users whose accounts have immense reaches such as a high set of followers, shares, and likes.

Facebook has reiterated that the ID proof submission & stored will be done and maintained in the secure form and will never be shared on a user’s profile. And all those FB accounts who fail to pass this ID proof test will have to limit their reach for obvious reasons. Also, FB page administrators should pass on the verification test with colors until then they will be blocked from updating their pages.
