To all those posting their rental properties on the Australian Real Estate web portal ‘Domain’ here’s a warning.

A few days ago, a third party fraudulently accessed the servers related to the Domain and accessed the personal information of customers advertising their rental properties respectively.

News is out that the cyber crooks somehow got hold of personal information of customers such as their contact details that might lead to banking frauds or other such cyber-related threats in the future.

Jason Pellegrino, the Chief Executive Officer of Domain confirmed the news and stated that the incident was brought to the notice of the Australian Information Commissioner and other law enforcement authorities as a part of threat information sharing and analysis.

Domain’s IT Staff fear that the threat actors could have accessed email IDs and phone numbers of customers and could contact them and demand deposits to secure rental properties.

Investigation revealed that Domain was a victim of a phishing attack where hackers gained access to the administrative privileges of the website and contacted people looking for rental properties to demand money for securing a property for hire.

“It was a scam that spilled some details of our customers and we are trying our best to avoid such cyber incidents in the future by taking appropriate Cybersecurity measures”, says Mr. Pellegrino.

Note- Domain Group a subsidiary of Nine Entertainment Co happens to be the second-largest real estate marketing business in Australia and competes directly with New Corp Australia-owned REA Group. It has been a sponsor of Australian Men’s Test Cricket since 2018 and will soon be declared as an official partner of Cricket Australia in 2021.
