Jacob Riggs, a UK-based white hat hacker, was recently granted permanent residency by the Australian government after identifying and responsibly disclosing a critical security flaw in the servers of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).
Riggs was awarded the Australian National Innovation (subclass 858) visa, also known as the Global Talent Visa, in recognition of his exceptional expertise in cybersecurity. The visa allows highly skilled individuals to live and work in Australia with a pathway to permanent residency.
Notably, Riggs’s standard immigration application for permanent residency was still under review when his contribution to national cybersecurity came to light. After demonstrating advanced technical skill by uncovering vulnerabilities within government infrastructure, he was fast-tracked and officially granted the Global Talent Visa in December 2025.
Despite his achievements, Riggs does not come from a traditional academic background. His formal education extends only to secondary schooling. However, what distinguishes him is a 60-page professional résumé documenting extensive real-world experience, including bug bounty certifications and formal recognition from governments, universities, and leading technology firms across the globe.
Riggs emphasizes that cybersecurity is a field where practical expertise often outweighs formal degrees. According to him, technical ability, hands-on problem solving, and proven experience are far more valuable than academic qualifications alone—especially in an industry currently facing a global shortage of skilled professionals.
Currently based in Southeast London, Riggs serves as the Global Director of Information Security at a well-known software-as-a-service (SaaS) company. He plans to relocate to Australia by May 2026, where he aims to continue contributing to national cybersecurity efforts and the broader technology ecosystem.
Riggs’s journey highlights how demonstrated skill, ethical responsibility, and real-world impact can open doors at the highest levels, even without conventional academic credentials.
