Cyber Attack on Bureau Veritas

The digital operations of the multinational company Bureau Veritas(BV) was brought to a halt when hackers launched a cyber attack on the IT infrastructure of the company that offers lab testing, inspection and certification services.

In what is known to our Cybersecurity insiders, the security breach occurred on November 20 of this year and the company took down the servers and data offline in order to prevent any untoward incident such as data leak in the future.

An incident response team has been pressed into service to investigate the incident and Bureau Veritas is confident that it can bring its application and data access back to normalcy within the next couple of days.

Note 1- Since 1828, the said France-based company has been serving several business sectors such as Agri Foods, Marine supply, Building and Infrastructure, and Manufacturing. A couple of years ago, the company got into a strategic partnership agreement with Microsoft to develop testing lab software based on the technology of Artificial Intelligence.

Note 2- A certain section of media is reported that BV was hit by a ransomware attack that disrupted its server operations so much that the company had to pull down its server access to clients, employees and partners.

Note 3- Ransomware is a kind of malware that encrypts a database until a ransom is paid. However, in recent years, ransomware groups such as REvil, Conti, Lockbit has indulged in double extortion tactics where they first steal data and then encrypt the server until their monetary demands are fulfilled in cryptocurrency- a digital currency that is hard to track in transaction blockchain.
