HPE Aims to Shorten IoT Deployment Times, Lower Costs with MVNE

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is aiming to bridge the divide between different Internet of Things protocols to help speed up deployment times and lower costs with its new Mobile Virtual Network Enabler (MVNE) and other solutions, the company said this week.

In a Wednesday press release, HPE said it is rolling out a number of new tools for organizations to “dramatically change the economics and viability of large scale IoT deployments.”

“Cost-prohibitive economics and the lack of a holistic solution are key barriers for mass adoption of IoT,” Keerti Melkote, senior vice president and general manager at Hewlett Packard Enterprise, said. “By approaching IoT with innovations to expand our comprehensive framework built on edge infrastructure solutions, software platforms and technology ecosystem partners, HPE is addressing the cost, complexity, and security concerns of organizations looking to enable a new class of services that will transform workplace and operational experiences.”

According to HPE, its MVNE will provide IoT-focused provisioning, configuration, administration, and billing services paired with wide area mobile network operator coverage to reduce IoT connectivity costs by up to 80 percent.

HPE said it is also launching a suit of additional IoT tools, including a boost that will allow its Universal IoT Platform to facilitate communication between devices using different protocols – like LoRA and SigFox as well as cellular, radio, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth; and allow management of both SIM and non-SIM-based devices across different systems, devices, and applications.

HPE’s Aruba also announced the launch of its new ClearPass Universal Profiler and Aruba 2540 Series Switches to improve IoT security by identify and inventory all IoT devices as they connect to the network. Specifically, ClearPass identifies the attributes of IoT devices as they attempt to connect to the network.

“It is challenging to cobble together solutions from multiple vendors to interconnect and manage different IoT devices and systems,” ZK Research Principal Analyst Zeus Kerravala said. “This force fitting of solutions results in huge infrastructure and operations expenses and dramatically delays organizations’ introduction of IoT solutions. The new solutions HPE is delivering to address the barriers to IoT adoption can significantly shorten deployment times and simplify the network architecture which will also improve security.”
