WestRock, an Atlanta based company that involves in paper based packaging solutions, has been hit by a ransomware attack that disrupted its operations and information technology systems to a large extent. However, the company’s IT staff have clarified that they will not bow down to demands of hackers and will recover the systems from the backup units.

In what is known to Cybersecurity insiders, the attack that was detected on January 23rd,2021 was highly sophisticated where hackers stole a portion of data from the servers and locked it down from access.

Although no impact was felt on the systems serving the customers and staff, most of the servers including the one hosting the website was disrupted.

The law enforcement has been alerted about the file encrypting malware attack, and the authorities have started a deep probe on the culprits behind the incident.

As of now, the details regarding the ransomware gang are being kept under wraps until the investigation is finished.

Note 1- This Georgia-based company is highly competitive and is known to eat away its competitors within no time. Pretty soon, WestRock is said to become the world’s second largest supplier of Pizza Boxes.

Note 2- A ransomware attack is a kind of malware attack where hackers steal a portion of data and encrypt the database until a ransom is paid. Some ransomware spreading gangs are indulging in double-extortion techniques where they first steal a portion of data and then lock down a database from access. And if the victim denies paying a ransom, then they leak that data on the dark web for monetary benefits.
