This concern has recently prompted action within the European Parliament. After evaluating the possible risks associated with AI-powered applications on official devices, the Parliament’s administration staff issued a formal announcement blocking AI features across all corporate equipment. The decision reflects a precautionary approach to cybersecurity, prioritizing data protection over convenience. Lawmakers and staff members expressed apprehension that feeding internal or sensitive data into AI systems could inadvertently expose confidential material to external entities or malicious actors.
The move echoes previous digital security measures adopted by the institution; like in 2023, the Parliament restricted the use of TikTok on corporate devices, citing concerns over data privacy and potential foreign interference. Similarly, in 2024, restrictions were extended to WhatsApp, a messaging platform owned by Microsoft, due to comparable cybersecurity considerations. These actions illustrate a broader trend among governmental bodies seeking to mitigate digital threats in an increasingly interconnected world.
