According to a survey conducted by Datica, a cloud-based digital health platform, hospital CIOs prefer staying away from cloud due to reasons related to Security and HIPAA Compliance.

The survey which included 175 healthcare IT professionals as respondents confirm that security concerns are making the heads of healthcare organizations deter cloud migrations.

Only less than half of the participants of Datica Survey which was conducted at the HIMSS18 Conference held between March 5-9 in Las Vegas said they were comfortable assessing compliance, security, and privacy of application vendors that are hosted in the cloud.

Although the government of United States under the leadership of Donald Trump has made the shift to cloud as mandatory to the healthcare sector, only 20% of the hospitals have succeeded in adopting the cloud-based model into their environment- due to security and compliance concerns.

Note- HIPAA or Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act mandate’s companies dealing with protected health info to have certain physical, network and procedural related security measures in place. Thus, only those organizations serving healthcare sector and following Privacy rules, security rules, enforcement riles and breach notifications rules are termed as HIPAA compliant.

Often it is found that physician communities and innovative organizations push for specific applications to be moved to the cloud. But as organizations need to deal with other factors such as clinical communities, cost efficiency, and patient communities, they often show concern in using cloud-based applications due to security and data privacy concerns.

Datica survey confirms that more than 70% of respondents who took participation in the survey voted to hand over the task of hosting applications in the cloud to third party vendors. As it allows them to focus on other issues such as administration task and worry less about security concerns related to their data.
