
In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most transformative technologies in the digital world. From healthcare and finance to education and cybersecurity, AI is rapidly changing the way organizations operate and solve complex problems.
However, along with its many benefits, the technology has also created new challenges, particularly in the field of cybersecurity. This raises an important question: Has AI become a bane to cybersecurity, or is the real problem the way humans choose to use it?
Over the past few years, there have been growing reports of cybercriminals using AI-powered tools to make their attacks faster, more sophisticated, and more difficult to detect. AI can help attackers automate certain activities, analyze large volumes of information, identify potential vulnerabilities, and create convincing phishing or social-engineering content. What once required considerable technical expertise can increasingly be assisted by readily available AI technologies.
Like the Microsoft owned OpenAI which was caught in a recent controversy that one of its tools had gone rogue and launched cyber-attacks on Hugging Face and similar companies leading to data steal and aftermath controversies. Now, in the past one week, Iran was found allegedly launching cyber-attacks on a small power plant in Britain, bringing its operations to a major halt, on a temporary note.Â
There have also been other controversies surrounding the misuse of advanced AI systems. Reports and discussions about AI tools allegedly being used in unauthorized cyber operations have raised concerns among technology professionals and policymakers. Such incidents have fueled the perception that AI could become a powerful weapon in the hands of malicious actors, potentially enabling attacks on businesses, government institutions, and critical infrastructure.
The situation becomes even more concerning when cyberattacks target essential services such as electricity, transportation, healthcare, and telecommunications. Recent allegations involving cyber operations against infrastructure have once again highlighted how vulnerable digitally connected systems can be. Even a temporary disruption to a critical facility can have serious economic and social consequences.
As a result, some technology enthusiasts and cybersecurity professionals have begun discussing whether the use of AI in cybersecurity should be restricted. There are understandable reasons behind such concerns. However, completely blaming AI may be an oversimplification of a much more complicated problem.
AI itself does not possess a moral intention. It is a technology developed to perform tasks based on the instructions, data, and objectives provided to it. The same capabilities that can potentially help an attacker can also be used by cybersecurity professionals to defend systems.
AI can monitor enormous amounts of network activity, identify unusual patterns, detect potential threats, analyze malware, and assist security teams in responding to incidents much faster than humans alone.
In fact, as cyberattacks become increasingly automated, organizations may need AI precisely because human defenders cannot manually examine the enormous volume of digital activity generated every second. AI can therefore become both a weapon and a shield, depending on who is using it and for what purpose.
The real challenge, therefore, is not necessarily the existence of AI but the responsible governance and use of the technology. Governments, technology companies, cybersecurity organizations, and researchers need to establish stronger safeguards, monitoring mechanisms, ethical standards, and accountability frameworks. At the same time, organizations must continue investing in cybersecurity awareness and human expertise.
Ultimately, AI should not be viewed simply as a bane to cybersecurity. It is a powerful tool whose impact depends largely on its application. The technology itself is neither inherently good nor bad; the intentions behind its use determine the consequences. Rather than attempting to put a complete stop to AI in cybersecurity, the focus should be on ensuring that its capabilities are developed and deployed responsibly.
The future of cybersecurity may not be about choosing between humans and AI, but about humans and AI working together to ensure that technological progress does not become a vulnerability in itself.
