A recent survey by Harvey Nash has highlighted a growing concern within the tech industry: many cybersecurity professionals feel they are being underpaid despite the critical nature of their work. According to the findings, wages in the cybersecurity field have largely stagnated over the past several years, even as the demand for skilled experts continues to surge worldwide. This imbalance between supply and demand is raising questions about how organizations value and compensate those responsible for protecting their systems and data.
Cybersecurity has become one of the most essential functions in modern business operations. With increasing threats such as ransomware attacks, data breaches, and sophisticated hacking attempts, companies are investing heavily in security infrastructure. However, the survey suggests that this investment is not always reflected in employee salaries. Many professionals report that their compensation does not match either their level of expertise or the importance of their role, leading to dissatisfaction across the field.
The issue appears particularly pronounced in countries like the United Kingdom and the United States, before extending to other regions globally. A striking statistic from the survey reveals that 77 percent of cybersecurity professionals only see meaningful salary increases after remaining with the same employer for at least five years. In a fast-moving industry where skills quickly become outdated and new threats constantly emerge, such slow financial progression can be discouraging.
As a result, many cybersecurity professionals are reconsidering their long-term career paths. Despite being in high demand, the profession ranks surprisingly low in job satisfaction compared to other roles in the tech sector. It falls near the bottom, just above positions such as quality assurance testers and infrastructure specialists. This indicates that demand alone is not enough to retain talent—fair compensation and career growth opportunities are equally important.
If this trend continues, organizations may struggle to attract and retain the skilled professionals they urgently need. Addressing salary stagnation and recognizing the value of cybersecurity expertise will be crucial steps in ensuring a stable and motivated workforce capable of defending against ever-evolving digital threats.
