World Passkey Day celebrated on first Thursday of May-every year is a timely reminder that the era of traditional passwords is steadily fading. For decades, passwords have been the first line of defense for online accounts—but they are also one of the weakest links. From phishing attacks to data breaches and password reuse, cybercriminals have found countless ways to exploit them.
Enter Passkeys: a modern, more secure alternative designed to simplify logins while significantly enhancing security.
Basically, Passkeys are built on public-key cryptography and are tied to your device—such as a smartphone, laptop, or hardware security key. Instead of typing a password, users authenticate using biometrics like a fingerprint or facial recognition, or a device PIN. Because passkeys never leave your device and cannot be reused across sites, they effectively eliminate phishing risks and credential theft.
Switching from a password to a passkey is easier than many users think. Start by checking whether your preferred services support passkeys. Major platforms such as Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta to only a certain extent and many social media and financial services have already adopted this technology.
Once you confirm support, log in to your account using your existing password.
Navigate to the account’s security or sign-in settings, where you’ll typically find an option labeled “Passkeys,” “Security Keys,” or “Passwordless Login.”
Select the option to create a passkey. Your device will then prompt you to authenticate using your biometric method or PIN. After verification, the passkey is generated and securely stored on your device.
For added convenience, many ecosystems—like Apple’s iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager—allow passkeys to sync across your devices. This ensures you can access your accounts seamlessly whether you’re using a smart phone, tablet, or computer.
It’s also wise to keep a backup method in place. While passkeys are highly secure, having access to a secondary device or recovery option can prevent lockouts in case your primary device is lost or damaged.
Adopting passkeys isn’t just a technical upgrade—it’s a mindset shift toward a safer digital future. Organizations benefit from reduced phishing incidents and fewer support requests for password resets, while users enjoy faster and more secure logins.
