Study reports a 48 Percent rise in Global Cyberattacks

A study conducted by Check Point Research has reported a significant rise in cyberattacks worldwide, highlighting the growing threat posed by cyber criminals to organizations across various sectors. According to the study, global cyberattacks increased by 48 percent, while a 10 percent month-on-month rise was also recorded. These figures underline the increasing scale and frequency of cyber threats and the urgent need for stronger cybersecurity measures.

The report highlights phishing, ransomware, and the exposure of sensitive information as some of the most commonly observed cyber threats during the period covered by the study. Many of these attacks were carried out through malicious emails designed to deceive recipients into clicking harmful links, downloading infected attachments, or revealing confidential information. Such tactics continue to pose a serious challenge to individuals and organizations, as cyber-criminals increasingly exploit human error and weaknesses in digital security systems.

Phishing attacks often involve fraudulent messages that appear to come from legitimate organizations or trusted individuals. Once victims respond to these messages, attackers may gain access to personal data, login credentials, or corporate networks. Ransomware attacks, meanwhile, involve malicious software that encrypts or restricts access to an organization’s data, with attackers demanding payment to restore access. The exposure of sensitive information can also lead to financial losses, reputational damage, and further security breaches.

According to the study, the education sector was the most targeted industry, placing it at the top of the list of sectors facing cyberattacks. Educational institutions often manage large volumes of personal information belonging to students, teachers, and administrative staff. Their extensive use of digital learning platforms, online services, and interconnected systems can make them attractive targets for cyber criminals.

The telecommunications sector ranked second among the most targeted industries, followed by the government sector in third place. Telecommunications companies manage critical communication infrastructure and vast amounts of customer data, making them valuable targets for attackers. Government institutions, on the other hand, may face attacks intended to obtain confidential information, disrupt public services, or compromise important digital infrastructure.

The study also identified prominent ransomware groups operating during the period. The Gentleman was reported as the most prevalent ransomware group, followed by Qilin and Akira. These groups form part of a wider ransomware threat landscape in which cyber criminals use increasingly sophisticated methods to infiltrate networks, disrupt operations, and extract money from their victims.

The findings highlight the importance of adopting proactive cybersecurity strategies across all sectors. Organizations should strengthen email security, regularly update software, conduct security awareness training, implement multi-factor authentication, and maintain secure backups of critical data. Continuous monitoring and timely responses to suspicious activity are also essential to reducing the impact of cyberattacks.

As digital technologies become increasingly central to everyday operations, the rise in cyberattacks serves as a reminder that cybersecurity must remain a priority. A combination of effective security tools, employee awareness, and coordinated preventive measures can help organizations better protect their systems, sensitive information, and digital infrastructure against evolving threats.
