In a tragic turn of events, KNP, a historic logistics company operating out of Northamptonshire in the United Kingdom, has been forced to cease its operations. The closure, which leaves roughly 700 employees jobless for the foreseeable future, is a result of a crippling file-encrypting malware attack attributed to the Akira ransomware gang.
This cyberattack, which occurred in June 2025, has shaken the company to its core, halting its transportation and delivery services. In a desperate bid to salvage their operations, KNP Logistics attempted to comply with the hackers’ demands, paying a ransom in cryptocurrency, hoping to receive a decryption key to regain access to their encrypted data. Unfortunately, despite meeting the demands, the company never received the promised key, leaving them unable to recover crucial files, and ultimately, paralyzing their business operations.
The Aftermath: Orders Canceled, Customers Lost, and Employees Left in the Dark
Unable to restore their data, KNP’s ability to carry out normal operations has been entirely crippled. Longtime clients have been forced to cancel orders, and the company’s reputation in the logistics industry has taken a significant hit. The firm sought help from forensic experts to retrieve the encrypted data, but after weeks of unsuccessful efforts, the senior management made the difficult decision to permanently shut down the business. The damage to the company’s infrastructure and the long-term financial losses have left KNP with little hope of recovery.
While the management continues to explore alternative means of reviving the business, their focus has shifted to the wellbeing of their employees. With hundreds of workers now without jobs and no clear path to restore operations, the future is looking increasingly uncertain. According to trade analysts, KNP’s path forward is fraught with challenges. Many employees may never return to their roles, and the company’s legacy appears to be at risk.
Akira’s Ransomware Attack: A Look Behind the Scenes
Paul Abbott, the Director of KNP, provided insight into the cyberattack, revealing shocking details about how the Akira ransomware gang managed to infiltrate their network. According to Abbott, the gang gained access to KNP’s system after successfully guessing the password of a C-level employee, which granted them access to the company’s secure database. Once inside, they unleashed the file-encrypting malware that would ultimately paralyze the organization.
The breach underscores the critical importance of robust password security in protecting sensitive business data. Passwords remain the first line of defense against cyber intrusions, and companies must enforce best practices when it comes to password management. A strong password, consisting of at least 14–18 characters with a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters, is essential. Furthermore, adding an additional layer of security through multi-factor authentication (MFA) — whether that’s two-factor authentication (2FA) or biometric verification — is a crucial step in safeguarding against cyberattacks.
The Bigger Picture: Why UK Businesses Are Being Targeted
KNP’s attack is part of a troubling trend of cybercrime targeting UK-based businesses. In addition to Akira, another notorious ransomware group, DragonForce — linked to the hacking collective known as Scattered Spider — has launched
